I love dancing, but I'm sort of a “slow learner”. While I appreciate the on-line nature of Zumba class, I also really enjoy being able to work on a dance sequence and learning it. I also enjoy just dancing around, without worrying about any choreography.
It's kind of difficult to describe the kinds of dances I've been working on, so I set up this page. Since they are all on Youtube in one way or another, each post on this blog contains a video and a short description.
Most of the dances I've learned come from a group in Waco, Texas called Refitrev. They are one of the leading zumba/cardio choreography groups on Youtube. There are also some other groups I think could be interesting, but Refitrev is the one I currently favor.
One thing I've learned while doing this is that I actually don't really like most of the music used in Zumba. I also don't really like most of the non-Zumba music used by Refitrev, but there are a few songs I do like, and that's been one of the criteria I've used in choosing routines to learn.
That said, there are also a number of classic rock and pop songs that I think could be very good as the basis of cardio dance routines, and I think it would be fun to try to work out some sequences for them too.
I'm also really hoping that some of the other people in the group will bring in material, either that they already know and can show, or that they like and want to work on.
I also hope that we can convince Brian to let us do this in the group exercise studio before our first F4L class. I've been doing it in the dance studio, which is fine for a solo person, but for a group, we'll need to use the speakers, and other people like to come in the dance studio and work.
The purpose of this blog is to be able to share music, videos, and so on more easily. If it is useful, we'll keep using it, otherwise we'll try something else.
Note that the blog displays entries newest first. I entered the dances I already knew first, so the first few displayed entries are dances I don't know yet or completely.
UPDATE June 8
I created an email list for us to use: a-little-more-dancing@googlegroups.com
I think this will make it easier to discuss scheduling, content, and so on.
UPDATE June 11
Two things. First, I have asked Brian to look into the possibility of adding this on the official schedule, MWF at 7am in the GX studio. I have no idea if this would fly, but I'd love if it did, because it would get more exposure as an “official” class, plus, it could be in the GX room, which is more convenient. I asked for three days rather than five, because I've discovered that having the class every day makes it harder for me to learn new dances. Three days a week of class should be just about right.
Second, I've added six more dances to the blog. These are dances I like enough to learn for the class. It's possible I won't do them all, but probable that I will. This will take some time, though.
